Mulder and Rabada Shine as South Africa Dominates Bangladesh on Day Two of the Chittagong Test

In a display of sheer dominance, South Africa put Bangladesh on the back foot during the second day of the second Test at Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium, leading by a staggering 537 runs at the stumps. The visitors declared at 575 for 6, powered by outstanding performances from Wiaan Mulder, Tony de Zorzi, and Tristan Stubbs, all of whom scored centuries.

Wiaan Mulder’s innings of 105 not out, along with a crucial unbeaten 152-run partnership with Senuran Muthusamy, helped South Africa recover after a brief period of pressure earlier in the day. Muthusamy also made significant contributions with his maiden Test fifty, scoring 54 runs. The pair broke the previous record for the seventh-wicket partnership against Bangladesh, surpassing the 119 runs set by Mulder and Kyle Verreynne in the first test in Mirpur.

On a batting-friendly pitch, the South African batting lineup excelled, with de Zorzi top-scoring at 177 and Stubbs contributing 106. However, the Bangladesh bowlers managed to claim a few wickets, with Taijul Islam standing out with figures of 5 for 198, despite his high cost. He claimed the scalps of David Bedingham, de Zorzi, and Kyle Verreynne in quick succession, providing a glimmer of hope for the home side.

As Bangladesh began their innings, they faced a barrage of early strikes from South African bowlers. Kagiso Rabada, recently ranked the No. 1 Test bowler, dismissed Shadman Islam for a duck in the very first over, before claiming Zakir Hasan for just 2 runs in his next over. Dane Paterson joined the party, taking the wicket of Mahmudul Hasan Joy, while Keshav Maharaj clean-bowled nightwatchman Hasan Mahmud for 3 runs.

Bangladesh found themselves in dire straits at 38 for 4, with their batting vulnerabilities on full display. The hosts are now facing the daunting task of mounting a significant comeback to avoid a heavy defeat.

Despite being awarded five penalty runs due to pitch damage caused by Muthusamy, Bangladesh struggled to find any rhythm or momentum. Their hopes of recovering were dashed as the South African bowlers continued to exert pressure.

As the match progresses into its third day, Bangladesh will need a monumental effort to turn the tide and salvage their position in this Test match. The visitors, meanwhile, look to capitalize on their stronghold and secure a commanding victory.
