South Africa Secures Historic Innings Win Over Bangladesh in Chattogram to Clean Sweep Series

In a remarkable display of dominance, South Africa clinched their largest-ever victory by defeating Bangladesh with a margin of an Inning 273 runs in the second Test at Chattogram. This win not only marks South Africa’s first series sweep in Asia since 2008 but also their first series win in the subcontinent in a decade.

The South African team showcased their strength with a formidable declaration at 575 for 6, driven by stellar centuries from Tony de Zorzi (177), Tristan Stubbs (106), and Wiaan Mulder, who remained unbeaten on 105. Bangladesh struggled in response, managing just 159 in the first innings, with Mominul Haque top-scoring at 82. Kagiso Rabada shone with the ball, claiming 5 for 37.

Bangladesh’s second innings was not different from the first one, as they were bowled out for 143. Skipper Shanto and Hasan Mahmud offered some resistance with 36 and 38 respectively, but the rest of the batting lineup faltered against South Africa’s fierce bowling attack. Keshav Maharaj was exceptional, capturing 5 for 59, while Muthusamy added 4 for 45 to his tally.

The match was characterized by South Africa’s overwhelming bowling performance, with both spinners and seamers claiming vital wickets. Rabada’s spell included two wickets in three balls early in the first innings, while Muthusamy’s career-best performance further exemplified South Africa’s control.

Bangladesh’s batting woes were evident, particularly in their shot selection and inability to form significant partnerships. Their captain, Najmul Hossain Shanto, faced criticism for his indecisive batting, which resulted in an early dismissal. Despite Mominul’s spirited effort, the team struggled to build on individual performances, raising concerns about their batting approach against quality opposition.

With this victory, South Africa now moves into fourth place in the World Test Championship points table and aims to secure at least three wins in their upcoming home Tests to keep their final ambitions alive.

As South Africa celebrates this historic triumph, Bangladesh faces the daunting task of reassessing its strategies as they prepare for future challenges.
