Brazil avoided a massive shock in the FIFA World Cup by coming back to beat Japan 2-1 in the Round of 32 clash on Sunday. The five-time world champions earned their spot in the Round of 16 with a stoppage-time winner to cap off an enthralling come-from-behind match.
Japan manufactured another energetic and disciplined display as they built up a deserved halftime lead and left Brazil sweating for long periods. But the South Americans demonstrated their knowhow and experience, scoring twice after half-time to end Japan’s admirable tournament journey.
Japan Shock Brazil with First-Half Lead
Japan were the more assertive of the two sides in the opening exchanges, closing down Brazil’s experienced stars and giving them little time on the ball. The positive approach worked right before the half-time whistle when Kaishu Sano capitalised on a defensive mistake and created a brilliant solo finish to put Samurai Blue 1-0 up.
The goal shocked Brazil, with their lack of clear openings prior to half-time. Japan showed its customary defensive discipline, but looked lethal every time it sprung an attack.
Brazil Respond After the Break
Brazil had to respond and poured forward in the second half, taking 70% possession. Only a good cross found veteran midfielder Casemiro inside the area to head in, giving way for their pressure to finally yield an equalizer.
It completely flipped the momentum in favor of Brazil following the goal. It was, again, difficult for Japan to recover as Brazil pushed forward, seeking the winner.
What came close a couple of times for Brazil, Japan defended bravely and provided the conditions to make sure this was still locked level as we went into stoppage time.
Martinelli Delivers the Decisive Blow
With extra time seemingly around the corner, Brazil struck just at the end of stoppage time.
Bruno Guimarães saw the run from Gabriel Martinelli pulling into the penalty area and slipped a ball along it perfectly. Martinelli stroked low into the corner and that triggered wild Brazilian celebrations from players and supporters.
The last-gasp winner rounded off the comeback from Brazil to give them a 2-1 win and send Japan crashing out of the tournament at the Group Stage.
Japan’s Brave Campaign Comes to an End
Japan did bow out of the tournament, but they received universal acclaim for their performances in the competition.
They progressed from a tough group, beating Tunisia and drawing with the Netherlands and Sweden. They showed tactical discipline, hard work and confidence against the giants of world football once again against Brazil.
Japan were also stinging without a key attacker in Takefusa Kubo, who was out with injury for the second match running. However, the team stayed firmly in the mix until Brazil scored a late winner to end their World Cup dreams.
Brazil Continue Their World Cup Mission
Brazil qualified for the knockouts with a first-placed finish in Group C:
- Draw against Morocco
- 3-0 victory over Haiti
- 3-0 victory over Scotland
They left Brazil with seven points, and those results set the five-time champions up for their future knockout rounds. Japan were a step up and made Brazil play one of their hardest games of the tournament.
Maturity in top pressure moments was obvious, as senior players responded when needed.
Experienced Players Make the Difference
Much of the comeback owed itself to Brazil’s veterans.
On top of that, Bruno Guimarães created the key opportunity for United with an intelligent assist. Backing everything up was Casemiro’s equalizing header, which restored belief. Martinelli, thrown on in hope of fresh legs and ideas to kickstart a victory push, scored the winner deep into stoppage time.
The cocktail of the experienced leaders and exciting young strikers ended up deciding as Brazil managed to find a way through Japan’s resilient defense.
Next Challenge Awaits Brazil
The win puts Brazil into the Round of 16 where they will meet either Ivory Coast or Norway.
The stunning comeback preserves Brazil’s chance of a sixth World Cup title, but also reveals vulnerabilities they will need to address as stronger opponents await in later knockout stages.
Another of the most hard-fought Sunwolves’ World Cup campaigns ended in heartbreak for Japan. Even in the most painful defeat, their organization, will and fearlessness illustrated that Japanese football is becoming an ever stronger force in world football.
Brazil, meanwhile, marched on after narrowly avoiding one of the biggest upsets of the knockout stage courtesy of a 90+1 minute winner that kept their hopes alive of claiming another World Cup.
