South Africa continued to assert their dominance on day two of the first Test against Bangladesh, finishing the day at 101 runs ahead after a commanding first innings and early breakthroughs in the second.

After resuming their innings on day 2, South Africa managed to post a total of 308, thanks to a spectacular century from wicketkeeper Kyle Verreynne, who scored 114 off just 144 balls. Wiaan Mulder also contributed significantly with a maiden Test half-century, scoring 54 runs. The pair rescued South Africa from a precarious 108 for 6, forging a seventh-wicket partnership of 119.

Bangladesh’s bowling attack was spearheaded by Taijul Islam, who took 5 wickets for 122 runs, while Hasan Mahmud supported well with 3 for 66.

In their second innings, Bangladesh stumbled early, losing both openers Shadman Islam and Mominul Haque for single-digit scores to the relentless Kagiso Rabada. Rabada’s superb pace and bounce saw Shadman caught at short leg and Mominul edged to slip, leaving Bangladesh struggling at 4 for 2.

However, a brief recovery came through Mahmudul Hasan Joy, who remained unbeaten on 38, and Mushfiqur Rahim, who added 31 runs in an unbroken partnership. By stumps, Bangladesh was 106 for 3, trailing South Africa by 101 runs.

The day’s play was marred by a couple of controversial moments, including a third-umpire decision involving Mahmudul, who survived a close stumping call. Despite Bangladesh’s struggle, they managed to stabilize their innings towards the end of the day.

As the Test progresses, all eyes will be on the Bangladesh batting lineup to see if they can recover and challenge South Africa’s substantial lead.
