New Zealand’s former captain Kane Williamson will be sidelined for the second Test against India in Pune as he continues his rehabilitation from a groin strain, New Zealand Cricket announced on Tuesday.
Williamson, who missed the opening Test in Bengaluru due to the injury sustained during the Test series against Sri Lanka, has been working on his recovery back in New Zealand. His absence marks a significant setback for the team as they aim to maintain their momentum after a historic victory in the first Test.
Head coach Gary Stead provided an update on Williamson’s condition, stating, “We’re monitoring Kane and he’s tracking in the right direction but isn’t yet 100% fit. We’re hopeful to see further improvement over the coming days and have him available for the third Test.” Stead emphasized the importance of a cautious approach to ensure Williamson’s full recovery.
New Zealand secured an impressive 8-wicket win in the opening Test, marking their first Test victory in India in 36 years. The team is set to face India again in the second Test starting on October 24, with hopes of continuing their success despite Williamson’s absence. The third and final Test will take place in Mumbai on November 1, and there is optimism that Williamson may be fit to return by then.
