India’s T20I captain, Suryakumar Yadav, is set to make his return to action for Mumbai in their upcoming Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy (SMAT) match against Andhra on December 3. After taking a two-week break to attend a family function, Suryakumar is ready to rejoin the squad and play a crucial role for Mumbai in the remaining fixtures of the tournament.
Suryakumar’s return comes at an important juncture for Mumbai, who currently sit in fourth place in Group E with two wins from their first three games. They have two league matches left after their Sunday encounter against Nagaland. The 33-year-old batter is expected to feature in the remainder of the tournament and will also be available for the upcoming 50-over Vijay Hazare Trophy, which begins on December 21.

However, despite his return, it is likely that Suryakumar will not take up the captaincy of the Mumbai team in SMAT. Shreyas Iyer, who has been leading the side in Suryakumar’s absence, is expected to continue in the role. Sources close to the team suggest that Suryakumar is comfortable with Iyer retaining the leadership position and is ready to adapt to any batting position as per the team management’s requirements.
Suryakumar’s leadership prowess was on full display earlier this year when he led India to a dominant 3-1 series victory over South Africa. His all-around contribution with the bat and leadership skills have earned him widespread recognition, but his focus now shifts back to Mumbai and his role in helping the team progress in the SMAT.

Mumbai, with their squad bolstered by the presence of several high-profile players, including Hardik Pandya, Shreyas Iyer, Tilak Varma, Rinku Singh, and bowlers like Yuzvendra Chahal and Varun Chakravarthy, will be keen to build on their solid start in the competition. Suryakumar’s return is expected to strengthen the team’s batting lineup, adding more firepower to the already talented side.
In October, Suryakumar had also played a round of the Ranji Trophy before heading to South Africa for India’s T20I series. His versatility and ability to excel in multiple formats make him an invaluable asset for both his state team and the national side.
