Sri Lanka Spinner Praveen Jayawickrama Banned for One Year by ICC for Corruption Breach

Sri Lanka’s left-arm spinner Praveen Jayawickrama has been banned from all forms of cricket for one year by the International Cricket Council (ICC). However, the last six months of his ban have been suspended, meaning they will only be enforced if he commits any further breaches in the future.

Jayawickrama admitted to breaking the ICC’s Anti-Corruption Code. Specifically, he was found guilty of “obstructing or delaying an investigation” by the ICC’s Anti-Corruption Unit (ACU). The charges, announced in August 2024, were related to actions that involved concealing, tampering with, or destroying evidence that could have been important for the investigation into corrupt conduct in cricket.

These violations occurred in both international cricket and the Lanka Premier League (LPL).

Praveen Jayawickrama made his debut for Sri Lanka in April 2021, playing against Bangladesh in a test match. Since then, he has represented Sri Lanka in five Tests, five ODIs, and five T20Is. He last played for Sri Lanka in a T20I series against Australia at home in 2022.

In the Lanka Premier League (LPL), Jayawickrama was part of the Jaffna Kings team that won the tournament in 2021. He played one match in that season, where he took two wickets. In the 2024 edition of the LPL, he played for the Dambulla Sixers.

Consequences of the Ban

While Jayawickrama will not be able to play in any domestic or international cricket for one year, the last six months of the ban will only come into effect if he breaks any further rules during this period.

This ban serves as a reminder of the ICC’s commitment to ensuring the integrity of the game and taking strong action against any violations of its anti-corruption rules.

What’s Next for Praveen Jayawickrama?

After serving the ban, Jayawickrama will be eligible to return to cricket, but he will need to work to rebuild his reputation and regain the trust of both fans and cricket authorities.
