South Africa secured a comfortable 139-run victory over Ireland in the 1st ODI of their three-match series, taking a 1-0 lead in the contest. Career-best performances from Ryan Rickelton and Tristan Stubbs with the bat, and a remarkable spell from Lizaad Williams with the ball, ensured a dominant win for the Proteas.

Match Summary

South Africa: 271/9 (50 overs)

Ryan Rickelton 91 off 102, Mark Adair 4/50

Ireland: 132 all out (31.5 overs)

George Dockrell 21 (32), Lizaad Williams 4/32

South Africa won by 139 runs

Rickelton and Stubbs Shine with Bat

South Africa’s innings got off to a shaky start after winning the toss and opting to bat. Early breakthroughs from Ireland’s seamers had the Proteas on the back foot, with Tony de Zorzi (12) and Temba Bavuma (4) departing inside the first ten overs. Bavuma, initially given out LBW, survived a review, but the reprieve was short-lived as Craig Young clean-bowled him soon after.

With the score at 39 for 3, South Africa needed a recovery, and it came in the form of a superb 152-run partnership between Ryan Rickelton and Tristan Stubbs. The duo consolidated after the early collapses, with Rickelton leading the charge, playing an aggressive yet controlled innings. He cut Mark Adair for a boundary off the first ball of the match and followed it up with a series of elegant drives and cuts.

Rickelton brought up his maiden ODI half-century off 74 balls in the 26th over and accelerated his scoring thereafter. He lofted debutant leg-spinner Gavin Hoey for a couple of sixes and found boundaries off both pace and spin as South Africa gathered momentum. Stubbs, meanwhile, was equally impressive, making 79 from 86 balls.

Rickelton was eventually dismissed for a well-made 91, falling just nine runs short of a maiden ODI century after misjudging a delivery from Andy McBrine. However, the momentum had firmly swung in South Africa’s favor, and despite a mini-collapse as the middle order faltered, the Proteas managed to post a competitive total of 271.

Williams’ Early Breakthroughs Dominate Ireland’s Chase

Chasing 272, Ireland’s hopes were dashed in the early overs as Lizaad Williams put in a spectacular performance with the ball. Opening the bowling, Williams wasted no time, dismissing Paul Stirling (2) with an inside edge that crashed into the stumps. He followed it up with the key wicket of Andy Balbirnie (20), who was clean bowled after playing a poor shot, and then removed Curtis Campher (20) with another inside edge that was taken at cover.

At 59 for 4, Ireland were in serious trouble. Harry Tector (12) and George Dockrell (21) tried to stem the tide with a brief stand, but Williams struck again, dismissing Tector LBW with a full delivery. When Williams removed Dockrell, trapping him leg before, Ireland was left staring at defeat.

The rest of the Irish batting crumbled as South Africa’s bowlers closed in. Ottneil Baartman, on debut, claimed his maiden ODI wicket, getting Stephen Doheny (7) caught behind, while Ngidi (2 for 28) and Wiaan Mulder (1 for 28) chipped in with the wickets of George Dockrell and Andy McBrine, respectively.

Williams, who finished with 4 for 32 from eight overs, was the pick of the bowlers, while Bjorn Fortuin added two wickets to ensure all South African bowlers were among the wickets. Ireland were bowled out for just 132 in the 32nd over, giving South Africa a convincing 139-run win.
