Jamie Smith’s Counterattack Leads England to Strong Position in Third Test Against Pakistan

Jamie Smith’s impressive 89 runs helped England establish a competitive total of 267 on a challenging pitch, as the visitors reduced Pakistan to 73 for 3 by the close of play on the first day of the third Test at Rawalpindi.

Winning the toss for the first time in eight attempts, England captain Ben Stokes chose to bat first on a surface that proved difficult for batsmen, showcasing irregular bounce throughout the day. Despite an early collapse, England managed to recover thanks to a crucial 105-run partnership between Smith and Gus Atkinson, who contributed 39 runs.

England’s innings started steadily, with Ben Duckett scoring a solid 52. However, the team soon found themselves in trouble at 98 for 5, as the Pakistani spin duo of Sajid Khan and Noman Ali wreaked havoc. Sajid shone with the ball, taking 6 wickets for 128 runs, marking his second consecutive five-wicket haul of the series.

The turning point came with the seventh-wicket stand between Smith and Atkinson, who rebuilt the innings after a precarious 118 for 6. Smith’s aggressive batting included six sixes, propelling England’s total to a more competitive score. Their partnership began cautiously but accelerated rapidly, with Smith reaching his half-century off 94 balls before launching into a blistering attack.

The turning point came as Smith and Atkinson took aim at Zahid Mahmood’s bowling, with Atkinson striking three fours in a single over. Despite losing Atkinson later in the innings, Smith continued to dominate until his dismissal, falling just nine runs short of a century.

In response, Pakistan’s batting faltered early, losing three wickets on just 46 runs as England’s spinners, particularly Jack Leach, made inroads into the batting order. Shan Masood (16*) and Saud Shakeel (16*) will resume the innings on day two, trailing by 194 runs.

As the match unfolds, England will aim to capitalize on their strong start, while Pakistan will need a resilient performance to stay in the contest. The stage is set for an intriguing second day in Rawalpindi as both teams vie for supremacy in this decisive Test match.
