Argentina Stunned by Paraguay, Brazil Held to Draw by Venezuela in World Cup Qualifiers

In a dramatic night of CONMEBOL World Cup qualifying action, both Argentina and Brazil were left frustrated as they dropped crucial points in their bid to secure automatic qualification for the 2026 World Cup.

Argentina Shocked by Paraguay

World champions Argentina, fresh off their Copa América triumph, were stunned in Asunción as they fell to a 2-1 defeat at the hands of Paraguay, despite an early lead. Lionel Scaloni’s side started brightly, with Lautaro Martínez scoring an 11th-minute opener, following a perfectly lofted ball from Enzo Fernández. Initial celebrations were cut short as the linesman’s offside flag went up, but a VAR review overturned the decision, and Argentina was awarded the goal.

However, Paraguay responded in sensational fashion just eight minutes later. Gustavo Velázquez’s brilliant cross into the box was met with a bicycle kick from Antonio Sanabria, leaving Argentina goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez with no chance.

The game continued to be a scrappy affair, with both sides battling fiercely in the heat of Asunción. Paraguay’s belief surged in the second half, and they took the lead just two minutes after the break. Omar Alderete rose highest to head in a cross from Inter Miami’s Diego Gómez, giving the home side a 2-1 lead that would hold until the final whistle.

Despite some late pressure, including a chance for substitute Valentín Castellanos, Argentina could not find an equalizer. Messi, largely neutralized throughout the match, could not inspire his side to salvage a point.

With the loss, Argentina remains atop the South American standings with 22 points, but the defeat has shaken their grip on the automatic qualification spots. Paraguay, meanwhile, leapfrogged into the sixth position, putting them in a strong position for World Cup qualification.

Brazil Held by Venezuela After Missed Vinicius Jr. Penalty

In another twist, Brazil was held to a frustrating 1-1 draw against Venezuela at the Monumental Stadium in Buenos Aires. The five-time World Cup winners dominated possession and created several chances, but they were unable to seal all three points, largely thanks to a missed penalty by Vinicius Junior.

Brazil’s attacking play was sharp early on. The electric winger, fresh off a stunning hat trick for Real Madrid, was involved in much of Brazil’s offensive work, but his efforts were not enough to break the deadlock in the first half. Vinicius hit the post from close range and later forced Venezuela’s goalkeeper Rafael Romo into a series of crucial saves.

Brazil’s persistence finally paid off just before the break when Raphinha curled in a magnificent free-kick to give the Selecao a 1-0 lead. However, Venezuela hit back immediately in the second half. Substitute Telasco Segovia, just moments after coming on, scored with a thunderous strike from the edge of the box, leveling the game at 1-1.

Vinicius Junior had a chance to restore Brazil’s lead in the 62nd minute after he was fouled in the box by Romo. But the Venezuela keeper redeemed himself with a superb save, diving low to deny Vinicius’ penalty attempt.

Despite sustained pressure in the final stages, Brazil could not find a winner. The draw leaves them in third place on 17 points, with their World Cup qualification hopes still firmly in their hands but far from secure.

Ecuador and Uruguay Impress

Elsewhere, Ecuador cemented their position in the qualification race with a dominant 4-0 victory over Bolivia in Guayaquil. Gonzalo Plata’s brace, combined with a penalty from veteran Enner Valencia and a stunning long-range strike from Alan Minda, sealed the convincing win. Ecuador moved up to fifth place in the standings, just outside the automatic qualification spots.

The South American qualifiers continue to heat up, with Uruguay set to face Colombia and Peru hosting Chile in Friday’s matches.

As the race for World Cup qualification intensifies, South American giants Argentina and Brazil will need to regroup quickly as the path to the 2026 tournament grows ever more competitive.

Standings Snapshot (Top 6):

  1. Argentina -22 points
  2. Uruguay -19 points
  3. Brazil –  17 points
  4. Colombia -16 points
  5. Ecuador – 15 points
  6. Paraguay -14 points

 What’s Next?

With only the top six teams securing automatic qualification for the 2026 World Cup, the battle for a place in North America has never been more intense. As Argentina and Brazil falter, the rest of South America is ready to capitalize, and the qualifiers are set for a thrilling final stretch.
