Arsenal Captain Martin Ødegaard Withdraws from Norway Squad for Nations League Matches

Arsenal captain Martin Ødegaard has withdrawn from the Norway squad for their upcoming Nations League fixtures against Slovenia and Kazakhstan. The 25-year-old midfielder, who is recovering from an ankle injury sustained while playing for Norway on September 9, will remain with his club to continue his rehabilitation.

Ødegaard made his first appearance in over two months last week, coming on as a late substitute in Arsenal’s 1-0 Champions League defeat to Inter Milan. He then started in the Gunners’ 1-1 draw with Chelsea on Sunday, but following medical assessments, it was decided that he would not feature in Norway’s next international matches.

Speaking about his decision, Ødegaard acknowledged that he is still working to regain full fitness after a long absence from competitive football. “When you haven’t practiced football in the last nine weeks, it’s natural not to be 100% yet. I need to listen to my body, complete this rehab process, and get my foot back in good shape,” Ødegaard said.

Norway’s team doctor, Ola Sand, explained that Ødegaard’s ankle injury has been “complicated,” and with limited training since his injury, the midfielder is not yet ready for international duty. The decision to have Ødegaard remain in London for further treatment was made in consultation with the player.

Ødegaard expressed disappointment at missing the upcoming matches but remains optimistic about his recovery. “It’s a bad feeling to lose these games, I love playing for Norway. But I have great faith in the boys and wish them the best of luck,” he added.

Arsenal, meanwhile, will continue their Premier League campaign without their captain, who has played a crucial role in their midfield this season. Ødegaard’s absence was notably felt during losses to Bournemouth and Newcastle, which have left Arsenal nine points behind league leaders Liverpool.

The Gunners’ next match is on November 23, when they face Nottingham Forest at home.
