India completed another dominant victory after wrapping up their two-match Test series against the West Indies by registering a win in the second Test by seven wickets and thus completing a 2-0 clean sweep. It was a display of good batting, sharp bowling and cool leadership – classic features in any team looking to hold its own against world cricket.
India’s Batting Power
India posted a whopping 518 for 5 declared in the first innings of that Test, and it set the tone. Young openers Yashasvi Jaiswal (175) and captain Shubman Gill (129), both of whom are considered promising talent, scored scintillating hundreds. B Sai Sudharsan, in only his second Test, made an impressive 87 to bat with calmness at No. 3.
The West Indian bowlers again found India’s top order too hot to handle, with Jomel Warrican (3/98) doing their little bit of damage. India’s tactics were aggressive but measured, they declared after only 4.5 sessions to pressure the hosts again.
Kuldeep Yadav Magic and Jasprit Bumrah Precious
India’s spinners took over from there as Kuldeep Yadav had a superb wickettaking turn, snapping up 5 for 82 in the first innings. He could pry out sharp turns and bounce from the surface that made life difficult for West Indian batters. Jasprit Bumrah chipped in with timely wickets to help bowl West Indies out for 248.
In the follow-on the hosts put up more resistance in their second effort. A spirited fightback was led by John Campbell (115) and Shai Hope (103), with Justin Greaves contributing a gritty unbeaten 50. But Kuldeep (3/104) and Bumrah (3/44) struck again to keep India in charge.
KL Rahul Anchor the Chase
Chasing a below par 121, India were off to a confident start before losing two quick wickets – B Sai Sudharsan and Shubman Gill. But KL Rahul played the perfect anchor. His unbeaten 58, which featured a straight loft and slog-sweep for six, was equally confident and controlled.
Rahul scored 192 runs in the series, behind only Jaiswal’s 219, and Kuldeep Yadav was the leading wicket-taker with 12.
Historic Win and WTC Boost
This win was India’s 10th in a row against West Indies and it underlined their dominance over the Caribbean team. But it was also Shubman Gill’s first series win as captain following the 2-2 series against England earlier this year.
With the win, India went to 61.9% points on the World Test Championship table, and clung to No. It was also India’s 122 Test victory, moving ahead of South Africa into third place on the list for most successful Test teams.
India’s sustained results are further indication of a promising future – one that features burgeoning leadership, batting depth and world-class spinning stocks.
