Bangladesh Takes Control After Stellar Bowling and Counter-Attacking Batting on Day 3 in Jamaica Test

Bangladesh seized control of the second Test in Jamaica, leading by 211 runs at the close of play on Day 3, after a day filled with outstanding performances from both their bowlers and batters. This marks a pivotal shift in the series, with Bangladesh recovering from a first-innings total of 164 to dominate the West Indies, who were bowled out for just 146 in their first innings.

In an impressive bowling display, fast bowler Nahid Rana took center stage, picking up a career-best 5 for 61, including crucial wickets during a blistering morning spell. His pace and height generated uncomfortable bounce on the Sabina Park pitch, as he sent the West Indies top order into disarray. The West Indies, having been in a solid position at 85 for 1, collapsed spectacularly, losing their last nine wickets for just 61 runs. Rana’s relentless pressure, combined with support from Taskin Ahmed and Taijul Islam, rattled the hosts, who struggled to cope with Bangladesh’s seam attack.

Rana’s first breakthrough came early when he dismissed Kraigg Brathwaite with a fiery delivery that bounced awkwardly, sending the West Indies captain back for a duck. He continued to trouble the West Indies batting line-up, removing Kavem Hodge, Alick Athanaze, and Alzarri Joseph in quick succession. Taskin Ahmed played his part, sending Alick Athanaze back to the pavilion with a well-placed delivery that caught the batter off guard.

The lower order quickly followed, with Hasan Mahmud’s double strike reducing West Indies to a dire position. By the time Rana wrapped up the innings with the dismissal of Kemar Roach, West Indies had been bowled out for 146, giving Bangladesh an 18-run first-innings lead. This marked a remarkable turnaround, as Bangladesh had never before taken a first-innings lead after being dismissed for less than 200 runs.

Bangladesh’s Counter-Attacking Batting

With the momentum firmly in their grasp, Bangladesh came out for their second innings with a clear intent to capitalize. Openers Shadman Islam and Mahmudul Hasan Joy faced the early pressure of West Indies’ fast bowlers, who were clearly riled up by the earlier exchanges. But it was Shahadat Hossain, promoted to No. 3, who injected life into Bangladesh’s response. Hossain attacked with authority, striking boundaries off the West Indies pacers, though his innings was cut short after a mistimed shot was caught at mid-off.

Shadman Islam, however, stood firm, playing a steady knock of 46 off 82 balls, including seven boundaries. He found solid support from Mehidy Hasan Miraz, who also played aggressively, blasting four consecutive boundaries in an over off Shamarh Brooks, including two straight drives and two edges through the slip cordon. Shadman and Mehidy’s 70-run stand for the third wicket was pivotal in setting Bangladesh up for a commanding total.

However, just after tea, Shadman fell to Brooks for 46, and Mehidy followed soon after, trapped down the leg side by Brooks for 42. Their dismissals slightly slowed the momentum, but Litton Das (25) and Jaker Ali (unbeaten on 19) helped Bangladesh progress further, taking the score to 193 for 5 by the end of the day.

The West Indies’ bowlers struggled to break through, especially with Kemar Roach only able to bowl later in the innings due to injury. Shamarh Brooks and Jayden Seales tried to keep things tight, but Bangladesh’s fighting spirit and aggressive strokeplay kept them in control.

West Indies’ Struggles and Bangladesh’s Rise

The day was a testament to Bangladesh’s resilience. After a woeful batting collapse in the first innings, they responded with grit and counter-attacking strokes, making the most of their second innings. The visitors had looked shaky at 164 all out, but their bowlers turned things around, bowling out West Indies cheaply, before their batters imposed themselves on the West Indies attack.

As the teams look ahead to Day 4, Bangladesh will be optimistic of further extending their lead, while the West Indies will have to summon something special if they are to mount a serious challenge in this Test. With the pitch expected to offer more assistance to the bowlers, the game is poised to enter an exciting phase.
