Urvil Patel Smashes Fastest T20 Century in Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy

Gujarat’s Urvil Patel has etched his name in cricketing history with a record-breaking 28-ball century, the fastest ever by an Indian in T20s, during the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy in Indore. His explosive innings guided Gujarat to a dominant 10.2-over chase of 156 against Tripura, finishing unbeaten on 113 off 35 balls, featuring seven fours and an astounding 12 sixes.

Patel’s remarkable feat surpassed the previous Indian record of 32 balls set by Rishabh Pant in 2018, and places him second overall in T20 cricket, behind Estonia’s Sahil Chauhan, who holds the record with a 27-ball century. Patel’s hitting display was a masterclass in power-hitting, with his sixes flying to all parts of the ground, including a series of big shots off Tripura captain Mandeep Singh.

This milestone comes exactly a year after Patel made waves in the 50-over format by scoring the second-fastest List A century by an Indian, a 41-ball ton in the Vijay Hazare Trophy against Arunachal Pradesh. The Gujarat opener’s recent form has caught attention, particularly after his release from Gujarat Titans ahead of the 2024 IPL auction, following a season where he didn’t feature for the franchise.

Despite his stunning performances in domestic cricket, Patel’s name went unsold in the 2025 IPL mega auction. Nonetheless, his sensational batting display against Tripura has put him firmly in the spotlight, reaffirming his status as one of the most exciting young talents in Indian cricket.
