SA vs IND 4th T20I: Samson and Tilak’s Record-Breaking Partnership Hands India 135-Run Victory Over South Africa to Clinch 3-1 Series Win

A sensational display of batting by Sanju Samson and Tilak Varma propelled India to a record-breaking 283/1 in their fourth T20I against South Africa at the Wanderers Stadium, handing the visitors a resounding 135-run victory and a 3-1 series win. The pair’s remarkable centuries not only powered India to their second-highest total in T20Is but also rewrote the record books in the process.

India’s Historic Total

India’s total of 283/1 is the highest ever posted by any team in South Africa, surpassing their previous best in the country, and the second-highest T20I total ever. It was a stunning follow-up to their record 297 against Bangladesh just over a month ago. The breathtaking partnership of 210 runs between Samson and Tilak was the highest ever for any wicket in India’s T20I history, cementing their place as the backbone of India’s explosive batting lineup.

Tilak Varma (120*) and Sanju Samson (109*) were simply unstoppable, treating the middle overs like the death phase, as they unleashed a brutal onslaught on the South African bowlers. Their partnership made history not only as the highest stand for India in men’s T20Is but also as one of only three instances of two players scoring centuries in the same T20I match.

A Masterclass in Batting

After a solid start at 73/1 in the powerplay, India accelerated relentlessly through the middle overs, with Samson and Tilak taking full advantage of the flat Wanderers pitch. By the 15th over, the score had swelled to 200/1, and the final six overs saw a staggering 84 more runs added to the total.

Samson, in particular, showcased his exquisite hitting, including nine sixes—four of which were drilled into the V—while Tilak’s leg-side dominance was on full display, hitting eight of his 10 sixes to that side. South Africa’s bowlers had no answers, with only Marco Jansen managing to keep his economy rate under 11 runs per over, while everyone else leaked runs at rates above 14.

The stand between Samson and Tilak eclipsed all expectations and delivered a perfect response to India’s aggressive approach, further adding to their dominance throughout the year. The pair celebrated with exuberance, with Samson showing off a flexed bicep to the dugout and Tilak sending a playful air kiss to captain Suryakumar Yadav, who has given the young batter the confidence to make No. 3 his own.

South Africa’s Struggles in Response

Chasing an improbable 284, South Africa’s response was subdued from the outset. Indian pacers Arshdeep Singh and Hardik Pandya made early inroads, reducing South Africa to a precarious 10/4. Arshdeep’s swing bowling was a highlight, dismissing Reeza Hendricks and Aiden Markram with deliveries that moved away sharply, leaving the hosts reeling.

While David Miller attempted to launch a fightback with a few big sixes, including a massive strike off Varun Chakravarthy, South Africa’s batting continued to falter. Miller (36) and Tristan Stubbs (43) provided brief resistance, but it was all too little, too late. Varun, the series’ highest wicket-taker, ended Miller’s knock, and Stubbs was dismissed lbw by Ravi Bishnoi in the next over. South Africa were eventually bowled out for 148 in just 18.2 overs.

India’s bowlers were clinical, with Arshdeep (3/20) leading the charge, while Axar Patel (2/6) and Varun Chakravarthy (2/42) added to South Africa’s woes.

India’s Dominance in 2024 T20Is

The win capped off an exceptional year for India in T20I cricket, finishing 2024 with an astonishing 24-2 record in the format. India’s triumph in Johannesburg not only secured the series but also marked their fifth bilateral T20I series win of the year, further solidifying their position as one of the most formidable teams in world cricket.

For South Africa, it was another painful defeat in a long line of T20I disappointments. With no series wins since August 2022, the hosts face a tough road ahead as they look to rebuild and find a formula that can challenge the world’s best in the shortest format.

As for India, their explosive batting and clinical bowling have made them a team to fear, and with several players in scintillating form, they will be looking to carry this momentum into the upcoming international T20I events.
