South Africa fast bowler Gerald Coetzee has been handed a reprimand and one demerit point for showing dissent after an on-field ‘wide’ call during the fourth T20I against India in Johannesburg. The incident occurred when Coetzee, unhappy with the umpire’s decision, directed an inappropriate comment towards the official, violating Article 2.8 of the ICC Code of Conduct, which covers dissent at an umpire’s decision.
Coetzee accepted the penalty, proposed by match referee Andy Pycroft, and avoided a formal hearing. This marks the latest in a series of disciplinary actions involving players in international T20Is.
Meanwhile, Netherlands captain Scott Edwards and Oman’s Sufyan Mehmood also faced sanctions following breaches of the ICC Code during the third T20I. Edwards was charged with two separate offenses after showing visible dissent on two occasions. The first came when he gestured with his bat after being given out LBW, and the second after he threw his bat and gloves onto the field in frustration. These actions were deemed violations of Articles 2.8 (dissent at an umpire’s decision) and 2.2 (abuse of cricket equipment or clothing). As a result, Edwards was fined 10% of his match fee and handed two demerit points.
Sufyan Mehmood, from Oman, also found himself in trouble after a provocative gesture following the dismissal of Teja Nidamanuru. Mehmood pointed the departing batter towards the dressing room in an unsportsmanlike manner, violating Article 2.5 of the Code. Like Edwards, Mehmood was fined 10% of his match fee and received one demerit point.
Both Edwards and Mehmood admitted their offenses and accepted the sanctions, eliminating the need for formal hearings. The disciplinary action comes under Level 1 breaches of the ICC Code of Conduct, which typically results in fines and demerit points.
These incidents serve as a reminder of the importance of maintaining discipline and respect for umpires and the spirit of the game, especially in international cricket.
