Sanju Samson smashed a blistering century as India posted an imposing total of 202/8 in the first T20I against South Africa at Kingsmead, Durban. The Indian bowlers, led by the spin duo of Varun Chakravarthy and Ravi Bishnoi, then tore through South Africa’s batting lineup to secure a dominant 61-run victory.

Samson, who had already set the stage with a century in the previous T20I series, was at his destructive best once again. His 107 off 60 balls, which included 7 fours and 10 sixes, was the fastest T20I hundred by an Indian against South Africa. Samson’s blistering strokeplay, especially square of the wicket, helped India race to a commanding total. He shared explosive partnerships of 66 runs off 37 balls with Suryakumar Yadav and 77 off 34 balls with Tilak Varma, providing much-needed momentum to India’s middle order.

Despite losing wickets towards the end, India still managed to post a competitive total, with Samson’s dismissal in the 17th over triggering a flurry of wickets. South Africa’s bowlers, including Gerald Coetzee and Patrick Kruger, did pull things back slightly but were unable to contain the Indian charge.

In reply, South Africa’s chase never really got going. The early loss of key wickets, including that of Aiden Markram (1), left them struggling. The spinners did the bulk of the damage for India, with Chakravarthy and Bishnoi claiming three wickets each. South Africa were reduced to 79/3 in the 11th over, and despite a brief resistance from Heinrich Klaasen (25) and Gerald Coetzee (23), they were bowled out for just 141 in 17.5 overs.

Chakravarthy, with figures of 3/25, and Bishnoi (3/28) were the standout bowlers, while Arshdeep Singh and Avesh Khan provided early breakthroughs. South Africa’s top order faltered under pressure, with only Klaasen and Miller managing to get past 20.

India’s victory was comprehensive, with their batting firepower backed by clinical spin bowling. This 61-run win gives them a 1-0 lead in the four-match series, with South Africa now facing a must-win scenario in the next game.
