David Warner Named Sydney Thunder Captain After Leadership Ban Overturned

David Warner has been appointed captain of Sydney Thunder for the 2024-25 Big Bash League (BBL) season, following the recent overturning of his leadership ban by Cricket Australia.

The ban, imposed after the 2018 Newlands ball-tampering scandal, had prevented Warner from holding any leadership role in Australian cricket. However, following a review process in which Warner demonstrated remorse for his actions, Cricket Australia’s Code of Conduct Commission decided to lift the ban, paving the way for his return to a leadership role in domestic cricket.

“I’m excited to lead the Thunder again,” Warner said. “It means a lot to me, especially with the chance to mentor younger players and pass on what I’ve learned over the years.”

Warner, 37, has previously captained Thunder in the BBL, notably in 2011, and will take over from Chris Green, who led the team last season. The Thunder finished bottom of the table in 2023-24, and Warner is keen to help turn the team’s fortunes around.

Trent Copeland, Thunder’s general manager, praised Warner’s leadership, emphasizing the legacy he is building for both his family and the club’s future.

Thunder’s BBL campaign begins on December 17 against the Adelaide Strikers, with the first Sydney derby against the Sixers on December 21.
