Jasprit Bumrah is poised to miss the third and final Test of the series against New Zealand at the Wankhede Stadium, raising questions about whether the decision stems from team management or the bowler’s own desire for rest.
During training sessions leading up to the match, Bumrah focused solely on light fitness and fielding drills, opting not to bowl at all. This absence from bowling practice has led to speculation regarding his availability for the upcoming Test.
While Bumrah has not reported any injury, the situation remains unclear. Head coach Gautam Gambhir acknowledged the rumors but expressed confidence in Bumrah’s preparedness. “I think he’s just done his preparations,” Gambhir stated, addressing concerns about Bumrah’s lack of bowling. “He knows how much he needs to prepare for the Test match,” he added, emphasizing the importance of conserving energy given Mumbai’s humid conditions.

Bumrah has been a crucial part of India’s bowling attack throughout the home season, participating in all four Tests thus far. He ranks third in both overs bowled (90) and wickets taken (14) this season. Recently appointed vice-captain, Bumrah is expected to lead the team during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy series, particularly in the first Test, which Rohit Sharma is set to miss for personal reasons.
Despite Bumrah’s heavy workload, assistant coach Abhishek Nayar reassured that his performance has not been excessive. “In the two Test matches against New Zealand, he’s bowled around 20-25 overs,” Nayar noted, highlighting that the previous matches have not extended to full five-day formats.
The pitch at Wankhede is expected to favor spinners, with fast bowlers likely receiving minimal assistance. The match takes on added significance for India, who have already lost the series 2-0, marking their first home series defeat in 12 years. Although the match is deemed a dead rubber, World Test Championship points are at stake, and India remains in contention for a spot in the final at Lord’s in June 2025.
As the team prepares for the Test, the absence of their star bowler could impact their strategy and performance against a determined New Zealand side. The final decision regarding Bumrah’s participation is anticipated to be announced shortly.
