In a strategic move ahead of their two-test series against Bangladesh, South Africa has recalled spinner Senuran Muthusamy and brought back Dane Piedt, joining Keshav Maharaj in a trio of frontline spinners. The squad, unveiled by red-ball coach Shukri Conrad, is tailored for the challenging conditions expected in October.
With recent political unrest in Bangladesh raising questions about the tour, Cricket South Africa (CSA) confirmed its viability following a thorough security assessment of the venues in Dhaka and Chattogram.
Muthusamy’s inclusion marks a significant opportunity for the young spinner, who is expected to make an impact with both bat and ball. The South African squad also features fast-bowling options Kagiso Rabada, Nandre Burger, and Dane Paterson, while allrounder Wiaan Mulder rounds out the bowling attack.
Notably absent from the squad are Lungi Ngidi and Anrich Nortje, with no updates provided on their fitness status, while Marco Jansen and Gerald Coetzee are on a break.
The touring party also includes 25-year-old Matthew Breetzke, the only uncapped player in the squad. However, with established names like Aiden Markram, captain Temba Bavuma, and others in contention, Breetzke may face stiff competition for a debut.
The addition of batting coach Ashwell Prince, who has previously worked with the Bangladesh team, is expected to be beneficial as South Africa looks to navigate the unique challenges of touring the subcontinent.
Currently sixth in the World Test Championship standings, South Africa has six Tests remaining in the 2023-25 cycle, with a record of two wins, three losses, and one draw. The upcoming series against Bangladesh will be crucial as they aim to climb the table and solidify their position.
As the team prepares to depart, all eyes will be on how the spinners adapt and make their mark in what promises to be an exciting and challenging tour.
