Rúben Amorim, the newly appointed head coach of Manchester United, has vowed to bring a bold, fearless approach to Old Trafford as he settles into his new role. In his first interview since taking charge, the former Sporting CP manager expressed his confidence in instilling an attacking, high-energy style of play, starting from day one.
Amorim, who arrived in Manchester on Monday, is preparing for his debut game as United’s head coach on November 24, when the team faces Ipswich Town. While acknowledging the challenges of adapting to a new club, he emphasized that his philosophy would be clear from the outset.
“We know it will take time, and we will try to win time with the games,” Amorim said. “But we have to start from day one without fear, without thinking that they are not used to playing like this. This is not on my mind. They will start on the first day with our idea, no matter what. That’s the goal.”
One of Amorim’s key tactical shifts is his preference for a 3-4-3 formation, which he successfully implemented at Sporting CP. This marks a departure from Erik ten Hag’s 4-3-3 system, under which United often struggled to find consistency and a clear tactical identity. Amorim believes that his approach will provide a strong, recognizable character to the team, something that was often lacking during the previous manager’s tenure.
“The most important thing for me is identity,” Amorim explained. “From day one, we will start with our identity. A lot of people now talk about the 3-4-3 and the 4-3-3 and all that stuff. But when I think of Manchester United, it is not a system of formation, it’s the character of the players, the way they see the club.”

He recently took a tour of Old Trafford himself and has urged players to do the same, emphasizing that it is essential to reignite the winning mentality that the club has been missing in recent years.
“When the players come here, they should make the same tour with the same guy all the time,” Amorim said. “It’s very important to feel that this is Manchester United. If you go a long time without winning, you start losing that connection. You need to be very clear with the message you want to send to the players.”
As Amorim prepares to take over next week, his focus is on creating a team with a clear identity, one that will play with confidence, passion, and an attacking mindset. While he acknowledges that success will take time, the Portuguese coach is determined to lay the foundations for a new era at Manchester United—one that is built on character, identity, and a fearless approach to the game.
