Travis Head Granted Leave as Australia Adjusts Squad for Bangladesh Tour

Australia’s preparations for the upcoming white-ball series against Bangladesh have been affected by several squad changes, with star opener Travis Head and captain Mitchell Marsh unavailable for different reasons.

Head has been granted personal leave and will miss both the ODI and T20I matches in Bangladesh. The left-handed batter was initially included in both squads after skipping the recent Pakistan tour due to his participation in the IPL playoffs with Sunrisers Hyderabad. However, Cricket Australia’s selectors have now decided to give him a break, considering his heavy workload across all three formats and a demanding international schedule ahead.

National selector Tony Dodemaide confirmed that Head’s absence is part of a long-term workload management plan. Australia expects the opener to return for the upcoming Test series against Bangladesh later in the year.

Meanwhile, Mitchell Marsh continues to recover from an ankle injury that first surfaced during the IPL. The injury had already forced him out of Australia’s Pakistan tour, and although there were hopes he would be available for the Bangladesh series, he will now miss the ODI leg. Marsh remains a possibility for the T20I matches, which are scheduled to begin on June 17, provided his recovery progresses as planned.

Australia has also suffered another setback with leg-spinner Tanveer Sangha being ruled out after sustaining a hamstring injury during the Pakistan series. In response, selectors have called up off-spinner Todd Murphy, who receives his maiden opportunity in Australia’s white-ball setup.

To cover the absences of Head and Marsh, Australia has retained Matt Short and Ollie Peake in the touring party following their involvement in Pakistan.

With both Head and Marsh unavailable, wicketkeeper-batter Josh Inglis is expected to continue leading the side. Inglis successfully captained Australia during the Pakistan tour and will remain in charge of the ODI squad. If Marsh is unable to return in time for the T20Is, Inglis is also likely to captain the team in that format. Regular ODI captain Pat Cummins is being rested and will not travel to Bangladesh.

The series presents an opportunity for several emerging players to impress as Australia manages key players ahead of a busy international season.
