Taijul Islam Ready to Step Up as Test Captain Amid Najmul Hossain Shanto’s Uncertainty

Left-arm spinner Taijul Islam has expressed his readiness to take on the role of Test captain for Bangladesh, following speculation about current skipper Najmul Hossain’s future. In an interview on Monday, Taijul emphasized his preparedness for leadership after a decade of international cricket experience.

Recent reports from Cricbuzz indicated that Najmul Hossain is contemplating stepping down from his captaincy after the ongoing home series against South Africa. The situation has led to various names being discussed as potential replacements in different formats. Najmul, appointed as the all-format captain in February 2024 for a one-year term, is expected to have a decisive conversation with Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) president Faruque Ahmed soon.

Taijul, while acknowledging that he has not directly heard about Najmul’s intentions to quit, stated, “Having played for 10 years, I’m fully prepared for captaincy.” He maintained that such discussions are outside the players’ responsibilities and encouraged focus on team performance.

The spinner also addressed the impact of external factors on player morale, particularly in light of potential retirements from senior players like Tamim Iqbal and Shakib Al Hasan during the ongoing series. “This is a team game. The most important thing is that the team remains in good condition,” he remarked. “Some players may be affected by outside events, while others can continue their role with calmness.”

Looking ahead to the second Test against South Africa, where Bangladesh seeks to avoid a series loss after a seven-wicket defeat in the first match, Taijul highlighted the need for batters to take greater responsibility. “Our goal remains the same: we’ll play to win,” he stated, emphasizing the importance of building partnerships and achieving individual milestones to enhance the team’s overall performance.

As a senior player, Taijul is keen to share his insights with teammates. He noted that while he can offer advice on field positioning and strategies during matches, the willingness of others to accept this guidance is crucial. He praised fellow spinners Nayeem Hasan and Mehidy Hasan Miraz, defending their abilities despite recent performance fluctuations.

“Nayeem’s record is quite good. Just because he didn’t get wickets in one match doesn’t mean he won’t perform well in the future,” Taijul said, expressing confidence in their collective potential. With a determined mindset, he and his teammates are set to approach the next Test with the aim of turning their fortunes around and securing a much-needed victory.
