Najmul Hossain Shanto to Step Down as Bangladesh Captain After South Africa Tests

In a significant development for Bangladeshi cricket, Najmul Hossain Shanto has expressed his intention to resign as captain of the national team following the ongoing Test series against South Africa. The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has confirmed that Shanto, who has been at the helm since November 2023, has communicated his decision to senior officials.

Shanto’s fluctuating form has played a pivotal role in his decision to step down. Since taking over the captaincy, he has struggled with his batting, averaging just 25.76 in Test matches. His recent performance was highlighted by a mere seven runs in the first Test against South Africa, which Bangladesh lost by seven wickets.

While Shanto’s captaincy has seen some success—most notably leading Bangladesh to victories against New Zealand and Pakistan—his recent struggles with the bat have led him to reassess his leadership role. Shanto, who has captained the team across all three formats, indicated that he wishes for the ongoing Test series to be his last as captain.

The BCB is yet to address Shanto’s resignation formally, as President Faruque Ahmed is currently out of the country and expected to return to Dhaka soon. If accepted, the board will need to quickly identify a new captain, especially with a busy schedule ahead. The second Test against South Africa is set to take place from October 29 to November 2, followed by a three-match ODI series against Afghanistan in the UAE beginning on November 6.

Shanto’s leadership was initially seen as a stabilizing force during a transitional phase for Bangladesh cricket, as the team navigated the retirements of key senior players. However, with the upcoming series against the West Indies starting mid-November, the BCB will need to act swiftly to ensure a seamless transition in leadership.

As Shanto prepares to potentially close this chapter of his cricketing career, the focus will now shift to how Bangladesh can regroup and perform under new leadership as they face a critical phase in their international calendar.
