Mandla Mashimbyi has been appointed as the full-time head coach of the South Africa Women’s national cricket team, succeeding Hilton Moreeng, who stepped down in May after an 11-year tenure. Dillon du Preez, who had been acting as interim coach, led the team to a runner-up finish in the 2024 ICC Women’s T20 World Cup but expressed uncertainty about continuing in the role.
Mashimbyi, a former fast bowler, boasts a wealth of experience, having played 48 first-class and 49 List A games for South Africa domestically. His coaching career includes successful stints with the Titans franchise and as assistant and bowling coach for South Africa Men’s team. He also recently worked as the fast-bowling coach for the Paarl Royals in the SA20.
“I’m honored and humbled to accept the appointment as the Proteas Women’s Coach,” Mashimbyi said. “I understand the significant responsibilities and expectations of this role.”
His first assignment will be a three-match ODI series against England, beginning on December 4 in Kimberley, followed by a one-off Test from December 15-18 in Bloemfontein. The team is currently trailing 2-0 in the T20I series, with the third match scheduled for Saturday in Centurion.
Mashimbyi expressed his gratitude for the opportunity, stating, “I’m deeply appreciative of the chance to contribute my knowledge and help elevate the Proteas Women’s team as a force in world cricket.” With Mashimbyi now at the helm, South Africa will look to continue its progress on the global stage.
