Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) are preparing for a significant overhaul of their squad ahead of the IPL 2025 mega auction, with captain Shreyas Iyer and star allrounder Andre Russell unlikely to be retained. The franchise is expected to retain only four players: Sunil Narine, Rinku Singh, Varun Chakravarthy, and emerging fast bowler Harshit Rana.
Despite leading KKR to their first IPL title since 2014 in the 2024 season, Iyer’s future with the team appears uncertain. The captain scored 351 runs at an impressive strike rate of nearly 147 during the season, proving instrumental in the team’s success. Russell, a stalwart for KKR since 2014, also made a significant impact last season, accumulating 222 runs and taking 19 wickets, including vital performances in the playoffs.
Mitchell Starc, who was acquired for a record INR 24.75 crore at the IPL 2024 auction, is also likely to be released. Although he struggled during the league phase, his standout performances in the playoffs, with figures of 3 for 34 and 2 for 14, showcased his potential as a match-winner.
KKR is also contemplating the retention of uncapped player Ramandeep Singh, an explosive batter who has been making waves in domestic cricket. If KKR opts to retain him, they will only have one right-to-match card left to use for a capped player, potentially limiting their ability to re-sign Iyer, Russell, or Starc.
The deadline for franchises to submit their retained player lists is October 31. According to new auction rules of IPL a team can retain up to six players ahead of the auction, with a maximum of five being capped internationals and two uncapped. The retention costs are substantial, with KKR set to lose at least INR 47 crore for four retained players or INR 51 crore for five.
Narine, Rinku, and Varun have been pivotal in KKR’s recent campaigns. Narine, retained for INR 6 crore in 2022, was named the Most Valuable Player in 2024, contributing significantly with both bat and ball. Varun has been a key bowler since joining the franchise, while Rinku’s impressive performances have earned him a place in the Indian T20I squad.
Harshit Rana’s emergence as a promising fast bowler has been a silver lining for KKR, with the bowler recently included in India’s Test squad for the upcoming tour of Australia. Meanwhile, Ramandeep’s performances in the Emerging Players Asia Cup have caught the selectors’ attention.
As KKR prepares for the mega auction, the franchise faces crucial decisions that could reshape its future and impact its chances in the coming seasons.
