Jason Holder to Miss Bangladesh Tests for Shoulder Rehab; West Indies Make Key Changes

In a significant blow to West Indies’ preparations for their upcoming Test series against Bangladesh, allrounder Jason Holder will miss the two-match home series set to begin next week, as he continues his rehabilitation from a shoulder injury. Holder’s absence has been a crucial one for the West Indies, as he remains one of the team’s most experienced and influential figures in all formats.

Holder’s rehabilitation will keep him out of action for both Tests in Antigua and Jamaica, scheduled for November 22 and November 30, respectively. The 32-year-old has been sidelined for several months now as he works on his recovery, which means West Indies will have to make do without his all-round capabilities in both batting and bowling.

While Holder’s absence is a setback, there is some good news for West Indies as they announce the return of key players to the squad. Offspinner Kevin Sinclair, who missed the recent home series against South Africa due to injury, has recovered and is back in the fold. Sinclair, who had been impressive in his earlier appearances for the West Indies, will add depth to the spin department.

Also making a return is fast bowler Anderson Phillip, who last played a Test in December 2022 during the tour of Australia. Phillip, who has been in fine domestic form, particularly during his county stint with Lancashire, where he picked up nine wickets in his final match of the season against Worcestershire, will be looking to make an impact in the coming series.

Additionally, Alzarri Joseph is also back after being rested for the South Africa series due to workload management. Joseph had been a key figure for West Indies in recent years but was given a break after an intense schedule that included both Test and white-ball cricket. Though he is currently involved in the T20I series against England, Joseph is expected to make an immediate return to the longer format.

Despite Joseph’s return, there has been a notable decision by the selectors to keep Joshua Da Silva as vice-captain. Da Silva, who had been appointed as Kraigg Brathwaite’s deputy during Joseph’s absence, will continue in the leadership role, even with the fast bowler’s return. This suggests that the selectors are keen to maintain continuity in the leadership group and have opted for stability in the squad.

The returns of Phillip, Sinclair, and Joseph will certainly bolster the West Indies’ ranks, but they will have to adjust to the absence of Holder, whose contributions with both bat and ball have often been pivotal in tight Test matches. Holder’s injury has already forced a shift in the team dynamic, but the squad will hope to compensate for his loss with a balanced mix of experience and youth.

As part of their preparations for the series, Kraigg Brathwaite will lead a CWI Select XI for a two-day warm-up match against Bangladesh starting November 17. This match, to be held at the Coolidge Cricket Ground in Antigua, will serve as an important dress rehearsal ahead of the Tests, allowing West Indies’ selectors and players to fine-tune their strategies and make final adjustments before the Bangladesh challenge.

  • Tevin Imlach

As the series approaches, West Indies will look to assert their dominance at home, with an experienced leadership under Brathwaite and the inclusion of several key players returning from injury. While Holder’s absence is a significant one, the team has ample firepower to challenge Bangladesh in what promises to be an exciting series of Test cricket.
