Jafer Chohan Leaves England’s Caribbean Tour to Focus on Lions and Big Bash Commitments

Jafer Chohan, the 22-year-old Yorkshire legspinner, has been released from England’s white-ball tour of the Caribbean to focus on upcoming commitments with the Lions and the Big Bash League. Chohan, who was named in England’s squad for the Caribbean series but has yet to make his debut, will fly back to the UK ahead of the Lions’ tour of South Africa and his stint with the Sydney Sixers in the Big Bash.

Chohan, a graduate of the South Asian Cricket Academy (SACA), was included in the England squad for the first time last month, marking a significant milestone in his career. His rise came after a challenging start to his professional journey, having been released by Middlesex as a 17-year-old in 2019 before finding his footing with Yorkshire.

Despite England’s current 2-0 lead in the five-match T20I series against the West Indies, Chohan’s departure is seen as a strategic decision to manage his workload. With a wealth of spin options already available to captain Jos Buttler, including Adil Rashid, Rehan Ahmed, and others, Chohan’s omission from the Caribbean tour also provides him with the necessary time to prepare for a busy winter ahead.

The Lions tour to South Africa, which runs from November 20 to December 14, will be Chohan’s next major opportunity. The tour marks Andrew Flintoff’s first as head coach of the Lions. Following that, Chohan is set to join the Sydney Sixers for the Big Bash League, starting December 15.

While Chohan’s fast-tracking into the England set-up is a notable achievement, especially given his background in National Counties cricket, his focus now shifts to further developing his game ahead of a promising career with both England and in the global T20 circuit.
