The much-anticipated IPL 2025 Mega Auction is expected to take place in the latter half of November, with the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) hinting at an overseas location for the event. Sources close to the IPL suggest that the Middle East is the frontrunner, with Dubai, Doha, or Abu Dhabi likely to host the auction, similar to last year’s Dubai edition.
In a surprising twist, Saudi Arabia has also emerged as a strong contender, signaling its growing interest in cricket and international sports. However, the final decision on the venue remains pending.
While the prospect of another overseas auction excites fans, IPL franchise officials are approaching the development with caution. The delay in receiving retention guidelines has raised concerns about their preparation time for the mega auction.
According to reports, the retention rules are expected to be disclosed by the end of this month, giving teams roughly two months to finalize their strategies. Franchises are expected to submit their retention lists by November 15.
This isn’t the first time the IPL has aimed to hold its auction abroad. Though initially planned for London in earlier seasons and briefly considered for Istanbul, the league achieved this milestone for the first time in December 2023 with the Dubai auction.
