The BCCI has removed the Impact Player rule for the upcoming Syed Mushtaq Ali T20 Trophy (SMAT). Introduced in the domestic T20 tournament a few years ago, the rule allows teams to make in-game substitutions, providing more flexibility in team strategy.
However, the rule has sparked debate, with many, including captain Rohit Sharma, expressing concerns that it could hinder the development of all-rounders in Indian cricket. Rohit recently voiced his opposition, suggesting it takes away from the traditional dynamics of the game.
Despite its removal from the SMAT, the BCCI confirmed the rule will remain in place for the IPL until at least 2027. Saurashtra head coach Niraj Odedra welcomed the change, noting that the rule is not used in international tournaments, which could benefit players aspiring for national selection.
The move signals a shift in the BCCI’s approach to balancing innovation with player development.
