Bangladesh showcased resilience on the third day of the Dhaka Test against South Africa, finishing at 283 for 7 and leading by 81 runs. Despite adverse weather conditions, the hosts fought back impressively, thanks to significant contributions from Mehidy Hasan Miraz and debutant Jaker Ali.
Play was suspended at 4 PM local time due to bad light, following a rain delay earlier in the day. The interruption was caused by unseasonal rain linked to a depression in the Bay of Bengal, which is expected to intensify into a cyclone by midweek.
Mehidy emerged as Bangladesh’s linchpin, scoring 87 not out off 171 balls, while Jaker made a commendable 58. Their seventh-wicket partnership of 138 runs proved vital, particularly after the team found themselves in a precarious position at 112 for 6.
The day began poorly for Bangladesh, with Kagiso Rabada striking early. He dismissed Mahmudul Hasan Joy for 40 and then bowled Mushfiqur Rahim with a delivery reminiscent of his first-innings dismissal. Soon after, Litton Das was caught behind off Keshav Maharaj, leaving Bangladesh on the brink of an innings defeat.
However, Mehidy and Jaker steadied the ship, navigating through a challenging first session. Mehidy played confidently, striking nine fours and a six, while Jaker, who had struggled in the first innings, found his rhythm with seven boundaries, including a confident pull shot off Rabada.
Their efforts propelled Bangladesh past South Africa’s first-innings total of 202, creating an 81-run lead as they look to secure a crucial win in the series. Jaker’s dismissal came just after he reached his maiden Test fifty, falling lbw to Maharaj after a solid 58 off 111 balls.
