Australia Rest Key Players for T20I Series Against Pakistan, New Captain to be Announced

Australia’s cricket selectors have announced a revamped squad for the upcoming T20I series against Pakistan, set to commence on November 14. With the Test squad preparing for a high-stakes series against India shortly thereafter, the decision has been made to rest all key Test players, including captain Pat Cummins, as well as T20I regulars Mitchell Marsh and Travis Head, who are currently on paternity leave.

Returning from injury, Xavier Bartlett, Nathan Ellis, and Spencer Johnson will bolster the Australian lineup, bringing fresh energy after their recent absences due to various fitness issues sustained during the challenging England tour. Johnson marked his return to competitive cricket last week in a One-Day Cup match, while Bartlett and Ellis are expected to be fit in time for the T20I series.

The T20I squad retains a familiar look, echoing the group that toured the England in September. Glenn Maxwell, having been rested from the T20I leg of that trip, will rejoin the squad alongside rising talents Jake Fraser-McGurk and Aaron Hardie. The batting order is likely to feature Short and Fraser-McGurk at the top, with Fraser-McGurk previously batting at No. 3 in his last T20I appearance.

As the T20I series against Pakistan precedes the Test series against India, Cricket Australia (CA) has strategically left the door open for members of the T20I squad to join the Test group if selected. This means that players like Josh Inglis and Sean Abbott may still find themselves in contention for the Test matches following the T20I series.

With the absence of experienced leadership, CA is yet to announce a new captain for the T20I squad. Potential candidates include Josh Inglis, whose tactical acumen has been noted during his tenure as vice-captain with the Perth Scorchers, as well as other players who have captained in domestic competitions.

In a notable shift, the coaching staff will also see changes for the T20I series. Head coach Andrew McDonald, along with batting coach Michael Di Venuto and bowling coach Daniel Vettori, will take a break ahead of the Test series, allowing assistant coach Andre Borovec to step into the lead role. Former Australian batsman Brad Hodge is expected to join as an assistant coach, while Matthew Wade, who has yet to retire from international cricket, will contribute in a coaching capacity.
