Tristan Stubbs hit an unbeaten 112 to lead South Africa to a comprehensive 174-run win over Ireland in the second ODI at Abu Dhabi, securing an unassailable 2-0 lead in the series. The win was set up by a powerful batting display from the South African top order, followed by an impressive bowling performance, led by Lizaad Williams. This match’s template is identical to the Ireland vs South Africa 1st ODI, where South Africa put up a great batting display and then bunded out Ireland cheaply.

South Africa: 343 for 4 (Stubbs 112*, Verreynne 67, Mulder 43)

Ireland: 169 (Young 29, Williams 3-36, Fortuin 2-36, Ngidi 2-38)

South Africa beat Ireland by 174 runs

South Africa’s Dominant Batting

South Africa, having won the toss, batted first and posted a massive 343/4. Openers Ryan Rickelton and Temba Bavuma gave them a solid start with a 68-run opening partnership. Bavuma, looking sharp after his early exit in the first ODI, played some aggressive shots before injuring his left elbow while diving for a single. He was forced to retire hurt on 30, but Rickelton continued to attack before falling for 40, caught by Curtis Campher off the bowling of the same man.

From there, Rassie van der Dussen and Kyle Verreynne carried the innings forward. Verreynne, in for the injured Tony de Zorzi, was particularly aggressive, pulling the ball to all parts of the ground. He reached a well-made 67 off just 51 balls. Stubbs, who came in at 136/2 in the 24th over, wasted no time, scoring a brisk 112* off 81 balls. His innings included 3 sixes and 8 fours, with a flurry of boundaries in the final few overs helping South Africa to finish at 343/4.

Ireland’s Struggles in the Chase

Ireland’s chase started poorly, as they lost their first three wickets for just 50 runs inside the first 10 overs. Lizaad Williams struck early, dismissing Andy Balbirnie for 1, while Ngidi removed Paul Stirling with a sharp delivery that hit the stumps. Williams then sent back Stephen Doheny and Curtis Campher in quick succession to leave Ireland in deep trouble at 50/5.

George Dockrell and Andy McBrine tried to stem the tide with a partnership, but their efforts were in vain. The lower order put up a bit of resistance, with Graham Hume and Craig Young adding 52 for the final wicket. However, it was not enough as Ireland were bowled out for 169 in 30.3 overs, with Bjorn Fortuin picking up the final wicket to wrap up the win for South Africa.

With this victory, the Proteas clinched the Ireland vs South Africa ODI series, with one match still to play, and will be looking to continue their strong form as they head into the final ODI to clean sweep the Irish team.
