Australia narrowly defeated Pakistan by two wickets in a gripping first One Day International (ODI) at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG), taking a 1-0 lead in the series. Despite a valiant effort from Pakistan’s Haris Rauf and a thrilling lower-order performance, the hosts managed to chase down a target of 204 runs, with skipper Pat Cummins sealing the victory with a composed knock.

In front of a lively crowd of 25,831, which echoed with the support of passionate Pakistan fans, Australia found themselves in a precarious position after a strong start from their middle order. Mitchell Starc’s brilliant bowling spell set the tone for the match, as he claimed 3 wickets for just 33 runs, including three maidens, to restrict Pakistan to 203 runs.

Pakistan struggled initially, their top order faltering against Australia’s fiery bowling attack. Babar Azam (37 off 44) and Mohammad Rizwan (44 off 71) offered some resistance, but it was an explosive late-order cameo from Naseem Shah (40 off 39) that gave Pakistan a fighting total. Naseem’s aggressive hitting, which included four sixes, was critical as he propelled the team from a precarious 117 for 6 to a more competitive score.

Australia’s chase began poorly with openers Matt Short and Jake Fraser-McGurk falling cheaply. However, a steady partnership between Steven Smith (44) and Josh Inglis (49) steadied the ship, taking the score to 139 for 3 before Rauf unleashed a sensational bowling display, claiming three wickets in quick succession to leave Australia reeling at 155 for 7.

With the match hanging in the balance, Cummins stepped up once again, showcasing his trademark calm under pressure. Despite losing his batting partners, Cummins anchored the innings with an unbeaten 32 runs, guiding Australia to the finish line amidst mounting tension. His performance, coupled with crucial runs from Sean Abbott, who was unfortunately run out, secured the win for the home side.

Rauf emerged as Pakistan’s standout bowler with figures of 3 for 67, leaving the Australian batting line-up in disarray at times. His effort was reminiscent of the drama that often accompanies matches involving Pakistan—an emotional rollercoaster of highs and lows.

The match was a showcase of both teams’ capabilities and highlighted areas for improvement as the series progressed. Australia’s ability to recover from difficult positions will be crucial as they move into the next ODI, while Pakistan will aim to build on the resilience displayed, particularly from their lower order.

As the teams prepare for the second ODI, set to take place later this week, fans from both nations will be eager to see if Pakistan can bounce back and level the series or if Australia can extend their winning streak in front of home crowds.
