Cristiano Ronaldo’s Final World Cup Ends in Heartbreak as Spain Edge Portugal with Late Winner

Cristiano Ronaldo’s aim to end his FIFA World Cup career with one final trophy came crashing down as Portugal was knocked out of the tournament by their neighbouring rivals Spain following a narrow 1-0 defeat in the Ro16. Spain 1 – 0 PortugalThe clash between Iberian rivals was still scoreless late into the match until Spain substitute Mikel Merino struck a dramatic stoppage-time winner, sending the European champions to the quarterfinals and Cristiano Ronaldo’s World Cup journey crashing down.

Portugal had to endure long spells of Spanish possession in which their backline appeared completely overrun time and time again. Despite their dominance, they were frustrated by courageous goalkeeping from Portuguese No. 1 Diogo Costa, who made key saves to deny Mikel Oyarzabal and Álex Baena among other Spanish attackers. Portugal stayed solid without the ball and created a couple of ambitious counterattacks, with the match still evenly poised in the second half.

Cristiano Ronaldo gave his all in attack but struggled to generate clear scoring chances in what is expected to be the last World Cup of his brilliant career. The veteran forward had one or two goes on goal and even tested Spain goalkeeper Unai Simón who was again key in denying him. Ronaldo kept leading Portugal until the final whistle but the defining moment came in stoppage time when Ferran Torres made space for Mikel Merino, who calmly slotted past Costa for a dramatic Spain win.

Portugal were forced to push desperately for an equaliser following the second goal. The closest opportunity to force extra time came through Bernardo Silva deep in stoppage time but his header went just over the crossbar. Shortly thereafter the final whistle sealed Portugal’s removal from the competition and presumably Charles’ last World Cup match along with Cristiano Ronaldo.

The game turned into a tactical rather than an attacking battle. Spain was slowly building attacks with controlled possession while Portugal kept a compact defensive shape and looked for chances to counter-attack. There weren’t many clear chances for either side in the first half, but Spain stepped on the gas after the break. But it was their persistence that reaped rewards; fresh faces injected speed into the game, and produced the goal that would seal a winner.

There was an achingly familiar feel with Spain’s squad depth once more key. The Spanish substitute bench made a difference then, with head coach Luis de la Fuente looking to spark his attack with changes and they bore fruit. Spain found winning moments that had eluded them in previous teams against often stubborn oppositions and Mikel Merino’s late strike just added to this.

Following the defeat, Portugal midfielder Bruno Fernandes said the result had been tough to take. He believed the team had sufficient quality to challenge for the World Cup title but felt they could not maintain the level of performance required over ninety minutes. But his adventurous troops were made to pay after defending resolutely for much of the game.

Ronaldo’s departure from the World Cup was a disappointing ending to his career, but he is cemented as one of football’s greats. He helped deliver Brazil to the stage of multiple World Cups, became one of the most iconic voices in world football history along the way, had a story full of memorable moments and championships, wowed audiences across generations, constantly set records from where-to-this-day-statistics will shimmer over time and made Portugal to stand behind him for nearly 20 years. Although the World Cup trophy has eluded him, his impact on football nationally and worldwide will likely be felt for generations.

Spain are through to the quarterfinals of the FIFA World Cup, where they will take on cauldron hosts Belgium. An impressive squad across the board, with tactical discipline and players who can deliver such excellence when it matters has put the Three Lions firmly in place as one of the pre-tournament favorites to lift the 2026 World Cup title, but for Portugal there is reflection on a campaign that came crashing out in absolutely the worst way.
