Daniel Munoz Inspires Colombia as Total Football Overpowers Uzbekistan in World Cup Opener

Colombia kicked off their 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign in style, running out comfortable 3-1 winners over Uzbekistan with a welcoming all around inclusiveness scratched by Daniel Munoz and Luis Diaz welcomed.

Colombia set the tone for a large portion of the match, showcasing the fluid attacking football that has become customary under coach Nestor Lorenzo in front of an electric crowd at Mexico’s Estadio Azteca. Uzbekistan battled bravely and showed plenty of promise in their World Cup debut, but were never able to contend with the South Americans.

The break came just before the half-time when Daniel Munoz was able to run in from his right-back position and find the net after Colombia spent a lot of the first period on top. The goal confirmed Colombian control and justifiably advanced them to 1-0 at half time.

Uzbekistan came out after the half, chains rattled but not shaken. A historic moment for the nation arrived when Abbosbek Fayzullaev netted his side’s first-ever FIFA World Cup goal. Colombian goalkeeper Camilo Vargas saved the first shot but Uzbekistan midfielder Fayzullaev was quickest to react and slotted home the rebound, sending Uzbek fans into raptures.

Colombia’s star winger Luis Diaz answered almost right away when the equalizer had shifted momentum for a few fleeting moments. After playing a part in the opening goal, Diaz was on target again to put Colombia ahead once more with an expert finish. His pace, creativity & movement created all sorts of issues for the Uzbekistan back line.

Colombians were attacking again and again comfortably, players swapped positions constantly, going forward from all quarters of the pitch. Munoz went forward time after time, an attack-minded player making a mockery of his defender classification and becoming a figurehead for Colombia’s cavalier approach to play. They moved numbers forward at will, and created plenty of chances, with Uzbekistan seeing little of the ball for long stretches.

Uzbekistan then went for a second equalizer at the end of normal time and left gaps. When substitute Jaminton Campaz added a third to the scoreboard, it sealed the game for Colombia. And the late goal wrapped up a comfortable win that saw Colombia take all three points in their first match of Group K.

Luis Diaz ended the night with a goal and an assist, receiving rave reviews as one of the stars on display. But equally Daniel Munoz added a further dimension in midfield with his goals and never tiring forward runs, ensuring Colombia did not lose control of the game. Those performances showed the sheer attacking depth at the disposal of Lorenzo as he aimed for a deep run in the tournament.

It puts Colombia in prime position at the top of Group K and gives them a perfect start to their World Cup. Confidence will be high, key players already finding their footing and Colombia go into the next match believing they can both through.

However, the night turned out not too negative for Uzbekistan even with such a defeat. The historic moment of the team’s maiden World Cup goal will be a memory to treasure, while their plucky performance against one of South America’s mightiest teams demonstrates that they can hold their own on football’s greatest show. They went home pointless but the display gave them hope for their remaining group games.

Ultimately, however, the majority of Colombia’s biggest wins generated from around that attacking quality combined with tactical flexibility – two things that Munoz and Diaz ideally bring. If they can keep it up, they might become one of the most fun and most threatening teams in the tournament.
