The fate of the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy venue remains unresolved, as the International Cricket Council (ICC) Board has decided to give the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) more time to negotiate with key stakeholders, including the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and the ICC leadership, to find a workable solution. The decision, which was made during a brief ICC Board meeting held on Friday, is now expected to be finalized over the weekend.
According to sources close to the discussions, the meeting lasted less than 15 minutes, with the Board agreeing to provide the PCB, along with the BCCI and ICC officials, more time to reach a consensus. A final resolution will likely require the approval of both the Indian and Pakistani governments, which adds another layer of complexity to the situation.
The primary issue revolves around the venue for the Champions Trophy, with three options on the table that the ICC Board was expected to decide on:
- Hybrid Model: This would see the majority of the matches played in Pakistan, but games involving India would be hosted in a neutral country.
- Full Relocation: The entire tournament could be moved out of Pakistan, with the PCB retaining the hosting rights.
- Pakistan-Only: All matches, including those involving India, could be played in Pakistan, though this would exclude India from participating due to political tensions.
The uncertainty over the venue has stemmed from the BCCI’s confirmation that the Indian government has ruled out sending the national team to Pakistan due to security concerns. This development has left the ICC and PCB in a difficult position, attempting to balance the interests of various parties while preserving the integrity of the tournament.
In the wake of this ongoing issue, the PCB has expressed its strong preference against the hybrid model, emphasizing that they are “not prepared to accept” such a compromise. PCB officials have made it clear that they want the tournament to be hosted entirely in Pakistan, asserting that it is in the best interest of Pakistan cricket.
As talks continue, the ICC Board’s decision is now expected to come over the weekend, with all eyes on whether the stakeholders can find a solution that satisfies all parties involved and brings clarity to the future of the Champions Trophy 2025.
