Persistent Rain Curbs Play on Day 1 in Durban, Sri Lanka Claims Early Wickets

A day dominated by rain at Kingsmead saw just 20.4 overs of play, but Sri Lanka made the most of the conditions, reducing South Africa to 80 for 4 by the time the weather halted play just before lunch.

In overcast skies and with moisture in the air, Sri Lanka’s captain Dimuth Karunaratne opted to bowl first, and his seamers immediately took advantage of the conditions. Vishwa Fernando and Asitha Fernando set the tone, swinging the ball in the dampness and consistently troubling South Africa’s top order.

Vishwa, particularly impressive with his left-arm seam, was able to extract significant inswing and off-the-deck movement, while Asitha found rhythm quickly, leading the charge with an early breakthrough. In the second over of the day, Asitha had Aiden Markram caught in the slips, and shortly after, Vishwa sent Tony de Zorzi packing, with Kamindu Mendis taking a brilliant diving catch at second slip.

South Africa’s middle order then found itself under pressure. Temba Bavuma, who ended the day unbeaten on 28, and Tristan Stubbs fought hard against the Sri Lankan attack. Despite some nervy moments, including several edges through the slips, they managed to reach the drinks break with a partnership of 32 runs. However, the Sri Lankan bowlers remained relentless.

Lahiru Kumara, Sri Lanka’s pace spearhead, had an early misstep with a wayward first over but quickly redeemed himself. After dismissing Stubbs, who was caught at third slip, Kumara produced a gem of a delivery to bowl David Bedingham for a duck. The off-stump cartwheeled as Bedingham was left stranded, playing for the seam movement that never came.

The day could have been even better for Sri Lanka, had they taken a couple of opportunities. Bavuma, on 1, was dropped by Karunaratne at second slip off Vishwa’s bowling, and later, just before the rain, Kumara found Bavuma’s edge with a bouncer that was intended to be hooked. However, the delivery was ruled a no-ball, and Bavuma was reprieved. At the time, he was on 20.

Despite the weather interruption, Sri Lanka can be pleased with their performance on an eventful opening day. Kumara finished with two wickets for 35 runs from four overs, while Asitha and Vishwa went for less than three runs an over. South Africa, however, will be relieved that Bavuma remains at the crease, showing patience amid the early onslaught.

With rain washing out the rest of the day’s play, the forecast for Thursday promises better weather, and Sri Lanka will be eager to continue their momentum with the ball when play resumes.

As the match stands, South Africa is 80 for 4, with Bavuma and Kyle Verreyne looking to rebuild their innings when play picks up again.
