Ivory Coast’s debut at the ICC T20 World Cup Africa Sub-Regional Qualifiers ended in disaster as they were bowled out for just 7 runs, suffering a record 264-run defeat to host nation Nigeria. This marks the lowest total ever recorded in men’s T20 internationals, surpassing the previous record of 10 runs set by Mongolia in 2023.

In their first ICC event since being inducted as an Associate member in 2022, Ivory Coast had already faced a heavy loss to Sierra Leone, bowled out for 21 after conceding 189/2. Their second match against Nigeria proved equally tough. After winning the toss and opting to bat, Nigeria posted a massive 271/3, powered by Selim Salau’s 112 off 53 balls, Sulaimon Runsewe’s half-century, and Isaac Okpe’s blistering 65 off 23 balls.

In response, Ivory Coast’s batting collapsed under pressure. The team struggled against Nigeria’s disciplined bowling, with the Ivorians managing just 7 runs in 7.3 overs. Opener Quattara Katienefoa Mohamad’s 4 runs off 6 balls was the highest individual score. The team’s innings featured seven ducks and three scores of 1, with captain Dosso Issiaka run out in a sign of the team’s disarray.

The defeat sets an unfortunate benchmark for the lowest score in men’s T20 internationals, a blow to Ivory Coast’s early steps in international cricket. As one of the newest members of the ICC, the team faces a steep learning curve, with limited domestic competition and resources for development. Their participation in these qualifiers offers valuable experience, despite the heavy defeats.
