Harshit Rana, the 22-year-old fast bowler, made a memorable debut for India in the first Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Perth, taking three wickets to help dismiss Australia for just 104. Reflecting on the achievement, Rana dedicated his debut to his late father, sharing an emotional message on Instagram: “A dream that my father and I saw 13 years ago has come true today. This one’s for you, dad.”
Rana’s journey to international cricket has been long and challenging. Although he was set to make his debut in a T20I series against Bangladesh last month, illness delayed his opportunity. “It was very difficult for me,” Rana admitted. “But Gauti [coach Gautam Gambhir] bhaiyya kept telling me to wait for my time.”
The night before his debut was filled with nervous excitement. “I didn’t get much sleep,” he said. “I went to bed quite late, following my regular routine. When I received the cap, I started to cry. I had watched these matches with my dad on TV, so it felt surreal to be part of it.”
Rana’s performance on the field was a testament to his preparation. He took the key wicket of Travis Head with a perfectly executed delivery, helping India secure a 46-run lead. Rana attributed his success to team discussions and the guidance of veterans like Jasprit Bumrah. “When Jassi bhaiyya sets the tone, it motivates all of us to perform,” he said.
Rana’s debut marks the realization of a long-held dream, with his father’s memory serving as a constant source of inspiration throughout his cricketing journey.
