Pakistan’s newly-appointed interim white-ball coach, Aaqib Javed, has made it clear that his primary focus will be on ODI cricket, particularly as the team prepares for the upcoming Champions Trophy. Aaqib, who will hold the role until the conclusion of the 2025 Champions Trophy, will embark on his first assignment with the Pakistan team this week during their tour of Zimbabwe. The tour will feature three ODIs and three T20Is, starting on November 24.
In a press briefing, Aaqib emphasized that the ODI squad will be “settled,” with minimal changes to ensure continuity and consistency. In contrast, the T20I team will see several changes, as the coach looks to give new players opportunities to prove themselves and strengthen Pakistan’s bench. “If you don’t give new players chances, you’ll never get the opportunity to improve your bench strength,” Aaqib said.
Reflecting on Pakistan’s recent 2-1 ODI series win over Australia, Aaqib praised the team’s performance, noting that beating Australia in their own backyard was a significant achievement. Under the leadership of Mohammad Rizwan, Pakistan showed resilience and determination to end a 22-year win drought in Australia.
Aaqib, whose coaching career spans two decades, also addressed concerns over his dual role as both coach and member of the selection panel. He downplayed any potential conflicts, stating that decisions would remain collaborative, with the final XI being decided by the selection committee.
The Zimbabwe series, with matches in Bulawayo, will be a crucial opportunity for Pakistan to build momentum ahead of the Champions Trophy in 2025.
