Morne Morkel, India’s bowling coach, has highlighted the importance of young all-rounder Nitish Kumar Reddy in the upcoming Test series against Australia. Speaking ahead of the first Test at Perth, Morkel expressed optimism about Reddy’s potential to make an impact, particularly in the challenging Australian conditions.
India’s pace attack, spearheaded by Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj, has received ample preparation in the lead-up to the series. However, the inexperienced support bowlers—Reddy, Harshit Rana, and Prasidh Krishna—are expected to face a stiff challenge. Morkel has been working closely with these bowlers, providing guidance based on his own experience of playing in Australia.
“It’s great to have them around in the squad,” Morkel said about Prasidh and Rana, acknowledging their potential to bring variety to India’s attack. “Harshit bowls at a good pace and extracts bounce from the surface, while Prasidh has the advantage of some experience from India A tours.”
Morkel specifically singled out Reddy, who is poised to play a key role as an all-rounder. Known for his accuracy and ability to hit the bat hard, Reddy could prove valuable, especially with early seam movement expected in Perth. Morkel emphasized Reddy’s role in holding up one end while the fast bowlers take a breather. “Every team values an all-rounder who can relieve the fast bowlers and keep the pressure on the opposition,” Morkel said, suggesting that Reddy’s accurate wicket-to-wicket style could be crucial for India.
In addition to Reddy’s potential, Morkel highlighted the challenge faced by India’s batting lineup, which could feature several young players. With the possibility of Devdutt Padikkal batting at No. 3 and Dhruv Jurel at No. 6, this Indian side could be one of the youngest to tour Australia in decades. Morkel expressed confidence in the younger players, stressing the importance of adapting to Australia’s fast and bouncy wickets.
“They’ll face a top-quality bowling attack. Australia’s not going to bowl you many bad balls, but with strong leadership within the group, we’re confident they can rise to the challenge,” Morkel said, acknowledging the mental resilience required for the series.
Meanwhile, the fitness of Shubman Gill, who injured his left thumb during a pre-series intra-squad match, remains a concern. Morkel confirmed that Gill’s progress is being tracked on a “day-to-day” basis. Though Gill was present at training, he did not participate fully. His chances of playing in the opening Test in Perth remain slim, with India set to make a final call on his availability just before the match. With Padikkal now in the squad after joining from the India A team, he is expected to slot in at No. 3 as a replacement for Gill.
As the first Test approaches, Morkel and the Indian team are preparing for a tough battle against Australia, with the hope that their inexperienced players can rise to the occasion in what promises to be an intense and challenging series.
