Aaqib Javed has been appointed as the interim head coach of Pakistan’s men’s national white-ball teams until the 2025 Champions Trophy, which Pakistan will host. The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) confirmed the appointment on Monday, stating that Javed will continue in his role as a senior member of the men’s selection committee and will take on additional responsibilities after the conclusion of the tournament.

The former Pakistan fast bowler, who had a successful stint as UAE’s head coach, takes over at a critical juncture for Pakistan’s white-ball cricket. The PCB explained that the temporary nature of the appointment was to ensure careful consideration in selecting a permanent head coach. PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi emphasized that the three-month period leading up to the Champions Trophy provides a window to evaluate potential long-term coaching candidates without rushing the decision.

“We have asked Aaqib to step in as the interim coach until the Champions Trophy. He is keen to explore other opportunities, but we have requested him to focus on this role for the next few months,” said Naqvi at a press conference in Lahore.

Javed’s appointment also creates an unusual situation within Pakistan’s coaching structure. While he assumes responsibility for the white-ball teams, he will retain his position on the selection committee, which gives him a say in decisions across formats. Meanwhile, Jason Gillespie, Pakistan’s full-time red-ball coach, does not have a say in the selection of the Test squad, adding a layer of complexity to the current coaching set-up.

Javed, who recently resigned as Lahore Qalandars’ director of cricket operations, has risen quickly through the ranks within Pakistan’s cricketing structure. He has previously made an impact with his tactical approach, including the spin-friendly pitches during Pakistan’s recent series against England.

Pakistan’s white-ball team will next play three ODIs and three T20Is in Zimbabwe from November 24 to December 5, before traveling to South Africa for a tour starting December 10. The Champions Trophy will be held from February 19 to March 9, 2025, with Pakistan serving as the host nation.

The PCB will initiate a search for a permanent white-ball coach once the Champions Trophy concludes.
