In a historic move for international cricket, Jay Shah has been elected unopposed as the new chairman of the International Cricket Council (ICC). The current honorary secretary of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) will officially take office on December 1, 2024, becoming the youngest chairman in the organization’s history at just 35 years old.
Shah’s ascension follows the announcement by Greg Barclay, the incumbent ICC chairman, that he would not seek a third consecutive term and would step down in November. Shah was the sole candidate nominated for the role, with nominations submitted on his behalf by the 16 current directors of the ICC, adhering to the council’s nomination rules.
Upon his election, Shah expressed gratitude for the opportunity and outlined his vision for the future of cricket. “I am humbled by the nomination as the Chair of the International Cricket Council,” he stated. “We stand at a critical juncture where it is increasingly important to balance the coexistence of multiple formats, promote the adoption of advanced technologies, and introduce our marquee events to new global markets.”
Shah’s tenure is set for three years, with the potential for an additional three-year extension. However, he will need to resign from his current position at the BCCI to embrace his new responsibilities at the ICC.
One of Shah’s primary goals is to enhance cricket’s global appeal, especially with the sport scheduled to participate in the 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles. He views this upcoming event as a pivotal moment for the growth and popularity of cricket worldwide.
“While we will build on the valuable lessons learned, we must also embrace fresh thinking and innovation to elevate the love for cricket globally,” he said. “The inclusion of our sport in the Olympics represents a significant inflection point for cricket, and I am confident that it will drive the sport forward in unprecedented ways.”
As Jay Shah prepares to take the helm of the ICC, the cricketing community watches closely, eager to see how his leadership will shape the future of the sport on an international scale.
