The Royal Challengers Bangalore are poised to retain three key players ahead of the much-anticipated IPL 2025 mega auction. Star batsman Virat Kohli, promising talent Rajat Patidar, and emerging fast bowler Yash Dayal are the players identified for retention, according to a report by ESPNcricinfo.
RCB will incur a significant financial commitment in retaining these players, losing at least INR 36 crore from their auction purse. The franchise has the option to utilize three right-to-match (RTM) cards during the auction, allowing them to reacquire a mix of capped and uncapped players. Specifically, they can opt to buy back one uncapped Indian player and two capped players, or potentially three capped players.

This decision comes on the heels of a mixed 2024 season for RCB, which saw the team finish fourth in the league and exit the playoffs following a loss to Sunrisers Hyderabad in the Eliminator.
Notably, RCB will not retain several high-profile players from the 2024 season, including captain Faf du Plessis, pacer Mohammed Siraj, all-rounder Glenn Maxwell, and rising star Cameron Green. This indicates a significant shift in strategy as the franchise looks to build a competitive squad for the 2025 season.
The IPL has set a deadline of October 31 for all ten franchises to submit their lists of retained players. Teams can retain up to six players, with a maximum of five capped internationals and two uncapped players allowed. The financial implications for each retained player are structured, with a minimum deduction from the auction purse for various categories of players.
