Pakistan’s star wicketkeeper-batter Mohammad Rizwan is poised to become the national team’s new captain in white-ball cricket, with the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) expected to make an official announcement in the coming days.
The move comes after Babar Azam stepped down from the captaincy earlier this month to focus on his batting. Rizwan has emerged as the frontrunner due to his consistent performances on the field and proven leadership abilities, both in domestic cricket and the Pakistan Super League (PSL), according to sources close to the PCB.
Rizwan’s appointment is seen as a natural progression, with the PCB reportedly finalizing the decision following several high-level meetings. PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi, national selectors, and head coach Gary Kirsten have been involved in discussions regarding the captaincy, with Rizwan’s name dominating these deliberations.
The wicketkeeper-batter’s seniority and reliability as a player, along with his leadership experience at various levels, have made him the preferred choice. “His seniority and reliability as a player, along with his experience leading teams at various levels, have made him a natural choice for this responsibility,” said a PCB source, highlighting Rizwan’s suitability for the role.
Rizwan’s leadership qualities have been evident in his previous stints as captain, and he has proven his ability to handle the pressures of high-stakes cricket. This includes leading his team with distinction in the PSL, as well as during domestic matches. His strong performances behind the stumps and with the bat have also contributed to his growing stature as a leader within the team.
As Pakistan prepares for upcoming tours to Australia, Zimbabwe, and South Africa, the timing of the captaincy change is critical. The selectors are expected to announce the white-ball squad by the end of this week, ahead of the team’s departure for Australia following the conclusion of the third Test against England on October 28.
Rizwan has already been consulted by key figures in the selection process, including former cricketers and officials such as Aaqib Javed, Azhar Ali, and Aleem Dar, who have gauged his readiness to take on the leadership role.
With the official announcement likely to be made soon, Pakistan cricket fans will be keen to see how the team adapts under Rizwan’s leadership as they look ahead to their challenging white-ball assignments on the international stage.
