Shakib Al Hasan, one of Bangladesh’s most celebrated cricketers, is facing increasing uncertainty over his return to the country amidst growing protests and safety concerns. The all-rounder, who was named in the Bangladesh squad for the upcoming first Test against South Africa, has expressed doubt over his participation in the match due to unrest in Dhaka.
Regarding the current situation, Shakib said, “I am not sure where I am going next, but it is almost sure that I am not going home.” This statement came after reports surfaced that protests were brewing against his return to Bangladesh, with a group of students identifying as “Mirpur Chhatro Janata” preparing to stage demonstrations in opposition to his arrival.
Shakib, who was a member of parliament representing the Magura seat, has been caught in the political turmoil that has unfolded in Bangladesh since the resignation of the Awami League government in August. The country has seen widespread unrest, with numerous political figures arrested, and Shakib himself has been implicated in an FIR related to an alleged murder during the protests.
Despite these concerns, Shakib remains in the Bangladesh squad for the first Test against South Africa, slated to be his final appearance in the format. However, uncertainty looms over his ability to join the team in Dhaka. Chief selector Gazi Ashraf Hossain confirmed that the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) had not received any further instructions regarding Shakib’s situation. “It is a paused status at the moment,” Hossain said. “He is currently in transit in Dubai.”
The BCB had initially given Shakib a “green signal” to travel to Bangladesh, with officials indicating that the all-rounder had been assured safe passage into the country. However, the rising protests, particularly by students, have raised concerns over Shakib’s safety. Some have warned that his return could spark further unrest.
Deputy Press Secretary to the Chief Adviser, Azad Majumder, echoed these sentiments, stating that the decision on whether Shakib would return to Bangladesh rested entirely with the cricketer. “Shakib can return to Bangladesh anytime. It’s his decision whether he will arrive here or not,” Majumder said.

Meanwhile, Youth and Sports Adviser Asif Mahmud, who has been involved in discussions around Shakib’s potential return, has advised against it. He cautioned Shakib not to come back to avoid any potential risks. “I have advised Shakib not to come to Bangladesh to avoid any untoward circumstances. This decision was made to ensure the safety of players and to protect the country’s image,” Mahmud said.
With Shakib’s future participation in the Test against South Africa now in question, the situation remains fluid as the cricketer decides his next steps amid a tense political environment. Bangladesh fans and cricketing authorities alike will be watching closely, hoping for a resolution that ensures both Shakib’s safety and the smooth running of the national team’s upcoming match.
