Virat Kohli Breaks Tendulkar’s Record, Becomes Fastest to 27,000 International Runs

Indian cricket star Virat Kohli added another milestone to his remarkable career, becoming the fastest cricketer to reach 27,000 international runs on Day 4 of the second Test against Bangladesh in Kanpur.

Kohli surpassed the legendary Sachin Tendulkar’s record, who reached the mark in 623 innings. Kohli achieved this feat in just 594 innings, becoming the only player to do so in under 600 innings. Other players in this elite club include Sri Lankan great Kumar Sangakkara and Australia’s Ricky Ponting.

Fastest to 27,000 International Runs

1. 594 innings – Virat Kohli

2. 623 innings – Sachin Tendulkar

3. 648 innings – Kumar Sangakkara

4. 650 innings – Ricky Ponting

In addition to Kohli’s record-breaking feat, India showcased an aggressive display in their first innings. Their quick-fire response, bundling Bangladesh for 233, saw Indian openers Yashasvi Jaiswal and captain Rohit Sharma lead the charge, reminiscent of England’s “Bazball” approach.

Former England captain Michael Vaughan took to X (formerly Twitter) to remark on the similarity, writing, “I see India is playing Bazball.” The aggressive “Bazball” style, popularized under England’s Test coach Brendon McCullum, focuses on attacking cricket, and India seemed to embrace this mindset.

India declared their innings after 34.4 overs, posting a rapid 285/9 and securing a 52-run lead in the final session of Day 4. Yashasvi Jaiswal top-scored with a blistering 72 off 51 balls, including 12 boundaries. Rohit Sharma’s 11-ball 23, Virat Kohli’s 47, and contributions from Shubman Gill and KL Rahul ensured the scoring rate remained high, despite losing wickets at regular intervals.

With two days washed out due to rain, India’s aggressive play signals their determination to force a result and solidify their lead at the top of the World Test Championship table. A 2-0 series win against Bangladesh would enhance their chances of reaching the WTC final for the third time in a row. However, a draw would make India’s path tougher, requiring them to win five of their remaining eight matches to secure a spot in the final.

Next up for India is a three-Test series against New Zealand in October, followed by a five-Test tour of Australia.
