In preparation for the highly anticipated 2025 IPL Mega Auction, the BCCI has introduced significant changes to retention rules, offering franchises greater flexibility.
Teams are now allowed to retain up to six players, including a maximum of five capped players and up to two uncapped Indian players. Retention can be achieved directly or through the Right to Match (RTM) option, with the deadline set for October 31st.
Notably, players will be considered “capped” if they have represented their country by this date. However, if an uncapped player is retained and debuts for another country before the auction, they will still be classified as uncapped, and ₹4 crore will be deducted from the team’s auction budget.
Adding to the excitement, the auction purse for the upcoming season has been boosted by ₹20 crore, now totaling ₹120 crore. The salary cap for future seasons will also see gradual increases, reaching ₹157 crore by 2027. Uncapped players will continue to cost ₹4 crore annually.
In a noteworthy clause, Indian players who have retired from international cricket for at least five years, such as MS Dhoni, can be retained as uncapped players—a rule that could benefit Chennai Super Kings.
The IPL’s Impact Player Rule will remain in effect for the 2025 season, while overseas players must register for the auction to be eligible for selection.
The retention rules for 2025 mark a significant shift in team-building strategies, as franchises now have more financial power and flexibility to create well-balanced squads.
