Sri Lanka’s Spin Masterclass Leaves New Zealand on the Brink of Loss in Galle

In a day dominated by spin in Galle, Prabath Jayasuriya and debutant Nishan Peiris tore through New Zealand’s batting lineup, leaving the visitors struggling to stay afloat. Jayasuriya bagged a remarkable 6 for 42, while Peiris claimed 3 for 33, as New Zealand were skittled out for a paltry 88— their lowest total against Sri Lanka— giving the hosts a staggering 514-run lead.

Forced to follow on, New Zealand’s second innings started poorly, losing a wicket in the very first over. However, Devon Conway, with a fluent 61, and Kane Williamson (46) countered the Sri Lankan attack, putting together a 97-run partnership. Yet, the duo couldn’t stave off another collapse as Jayasuriya, Peiris, and Dhananjaya de Silva spun the Kiwis into further trouble, reducing them to 5 for 131.

In an attempt to stem the bleeding, Tom Blundell (47*) and Glenn Phillips (32*) unleashed a late counterattack. They stitched together a defiant 78-run stand, off just 84 balls, smashing four sixes between them before bad light and rain halted play. Despite their resistance, New Zealand remains 315 runs behind, staring down the barrel of a massive defeat as the game heads into the fourth day.

Earlier in the day, New Zealand’s first innings imploded, losing 7 for 47 after resuming at 22 for 2. Mitchell Santner’s fighting 29 was the lone highlight in an otherwise dismal showing, as Sri Lanka’s spinners—led by Jayasuriya—exploited the Galle surface to perfection.

Sri Lanka will head into day four with confidence, while New Zealand’s hopes now rest on Blundell and Phillips to produce a miracle against the rampant Lankan spinners.
